The young American tenor John Pickle is increasingly sought out for his strong portrayals in a wide variety of repertoire. The New York Times described his voice as a “liquid tenor” and the Cleveland Plain Dealer said “Pickle’s tenor is so mellifluous that we are captivated whenever he lets his voice out.”
In the 2008-09 season and beyond Mr. Pickle will appear as Des Grieux in Manon Lescaut with Mobile Opera; Edgardo in Lucia di Lammermoor with Opera Southwest; Rodolfo in La Bohème and Don José in Carmen with Nevada Opera; Cavaradossi in Tosca with Opera Fort Collins; Tenor Soloist in Verdi’s Requiem with the Baton Rouge Symphony Orchestra; Tenor Soloist in Haydn’s Heiligmesse and the world premiere of Ed Lojeski’s Pslams of Passover with the New Jersey and Connecticut Choral Societies; Tenor Soloist in a series of concerts entitled J'aime Paris Opéra! with the Las Colinas, Arlington and Garland Symphonies; and in recital at The Bascom Arts Center in Highlands, NC.
In the 2007-08 season, Mr. Pickle performed as Turiddu in Cavalleria Rusticana with Opera Fort Collins; Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni with Mercury Opera Rochester; St. Brioche in The Merry Widow, the Fourth Jew in Salomé and a concert featuring highlights from Carmen with Florentine Opera; Kaspar in Amahl and the Night Visitors with Little Orchestra Society; Cavaradossi in Tosca in a return to Opera Southwest; the tenor soloist in both Mozart’s Requiem and Schubert’s Mass in G with MidAmerica Productions at Carnegie Hall; and covered the role of Pollione in Norma with Opera Company of Philadelphia.
In the 2006-07 season, Mr. Pickle performed as Rodolfo in La Bohème with Opera Southwest; Pollione in Norma with Mercury Opera Rochester; Tybalt in Roméo et Juliette with Opera Grand Rapids; Ferrando in Così fan tutte with Nevada Opera and Opera on the James; a concert of opera’s greatest hits with Opera Idaho and the Boise Philharmonic; and covered the role of Renzo in Zandonai’s La farsa amorosa with Teatro Grattacielo in Alice Tully Hall.
Additionally, Mr. Pickle’s promising career has included appearances as Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly with Opera Southwest; The Duke in Rigoletto with Center City Opera Theater; Werther cover with Saraota Opera; Camille in The Merry Widow with Nevada Opera; Pirelli in Sweeney Todd with Toledo Opera; Judge Danforth in The Crucible and Pong in Turandot with Utah Festival Opera; Gabriello/Un Cantore in Giordano’s rarely performed La Cena delle Beffe and Milio Dufresne cover in Zazà with Teatro Grattacielo; Captain Dick in Naughty Marietta and Lieutenant Karl in Sweethearts with Little Orchestra Society; Gérald in Lakmé and Sam Kaplan in Street Scene with Opera in the Ozarks; Alfred in Die Fledermaus, Karl Franz in The Student Prince, Philippe in The New Moon, and the title role in Offenbach’s Robinson Crusoe with Ohio Light Opera; and gala opera concerts with Nevada Opera, Boheme Opera New Jersey, Acadiana Symphony and Long Bay Symphony.
A gifted concert performer, Mr. Pickle has appeared as soloist in Handel’s Messiah with Greater Trenton Choral Society; Beethoven’s Mass in C with New Jersey Choral Society, Orff’s Carmina Burana with Cobb Symphony Orchestra and Long Bay Symphony; Bach’s St. John Passion with Rhode Island Civic Chorale and Orchestra; Bach’s Mass in b-minor with Gotham City Baroque Orchestra; Mendelssohn’s Elijah with First Congregational Church of Akron’s Concert Series; Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle with Stonington Choral Society.
Mr. Pickle has also been featured on several operetta recordings for the Albany Records and Newport Classic labels. These include Alexius in The Chocolate Soldier by Oscar Straus, Barry O’Day in Eileen, Captain Dick in Naughty Marietta, and Lieutenant Karl in Sweethearts all by Victor Herbert, Radjami in The Bayadere by Emerich Kalman, Schubert in Das Dreimäderlhaus by Franz Schubert and The Duke in A Night in Venice by Johann Strauss.
